On the new Star Trek movie

I chuffing loved it.

Clever, funny, well paced, and brilliantly shot. If you take the film as a typical summer blockbuster it delivers; it's immensely entertaining, the cast unformily photogenic, and the special effects are thrilling.

If you have any knowledge of the previous series though, there's a whole extra layer of in-jokes and references to the TV series that it's based on; in particular, the scene justifying breaking from canonical TV series is a masterstroke of tongue in cheek dialogue, but amazingly doesn't feel too laboured like it so easily could have.

It's really, really good fun. Go see it.

    I did not.

I actually found it quite laboured. It was as though they wanted to make a summer block buster but had to fit it into a heritage straightjacket. I felt as though the writers were Trekkies but that the director hated the franchise.

From a marketing / entertainment business point of view it’s genius. I’ll be interested to see how long this branch of the franchise lasts.

Can I ask if you would class yourself a Trekkie?

I fear I may be and that’s what ultimately spoilt it for me.

Final note – I’m the only person I can find who feels this way! Everything else I’ve read and head is in line with your feelings, so I’m happy to put this down to me being silly as opposed to right!
